I have a 1999 firebird, V-6 , Std trans. 185K. The rear end is howlling, mecanhic says it needs replaced. Got a quote for new parts $1,600 and quote for rebluit $1,400. Both include labor charge also. How big a job is it to do myself.

Thanks for using JA.
The rebuild of the rear end is a precises and a tough job, that will require special tools.
I don't recommend any one without good experience doing it.
The replacement isn't all that bad, it would be much better if you had a car lift.
you'll need a good floor jack, good sturdy jack stands, may need a torch, and time and patience. but it's do able.
I allready knew that it was not an easy job. I'm not satisfied with such a general non-specific answer. for $24. I though I would get step by step removal and instalation instructions. I could have got that kind of reply from an online Forum.
I opted out to give someone else a chance to help you out. best wishes
