1999 Sunfire: Heater fan..sporadically..fan switch..tested

Resolved Question:

1999 Sunfire - Heater fan does not work. It comes on sporadically for a few moments and goes off again. I have changed the fuse, the fan switch and took the fan out and tested it. It works fine. Could it be the heater / vent control switch? Any other suggestions? Phil

Hi,

Have you replaced the blower speed resistor?

Is the blower speed resistor the fan switch? If so, yes.
Expert:  Virtual Wrench replied 6 years ago.

Hi,

No,,,the resistor is by the motor. Pull the connector and see if it's loose or bad connections.

I have a tester. Can I test the blower speed resistor?

Expert:  Virtual Wrench replied 6 years ago.

Sort of,,,usually when the resistor goes bad it shuts down one or more speeds completely. It uses a different resistor value for each speed. So if you test it for continuity, it may check ok, but have a loose connection somewhere. Try moving the connector around when the fan is on and see if it will react.

When the fan cuts in for a moment it seems to work on all speeds. I will further try the connections. How do I stay on the line with you if I need more information from you after I try these things?

Hi,

Just post right back to this page,,,i will be in and out but will see it when you do. Also wiggle the wire right at the motor and see if it makes a diff. Sometimes the heat from the wire causes a poor contact.

I have already checked the wires and we have to go to town to buy a resistor. How do I post right back to this page when it has been some time?
