1995 Bonneville SE: one replace the trunk tension bars..body shop

How does one replace the trunk tension bars on a 1995 Bonneville SE? I have a set replacements can't a dealer or a body shop who can do it. There should either be a set of service proceedures for this. Any suggestions?

There are special tools that are used to remove and install the torsion bars. The procedure is out lined below. You may be able to use large screwdrivers or fabricate a tool to do this work.

 

 

Rear Compartment Lid Hinge Torque Rod Replacement

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 39384-3 Torque Rod Retaining Pin
J 39384-10 Torque Rod Adjustment Bar


    Object Number: 310009  Size: MH

  1. Remove the trim panel between the rear seat and the rear window.
  2. Remove the retainer clip from the torque rod (2) at the hinge (1).
  3. From inside the vehicle, loosen, but do NOT remove, the 2 hinge retaining bolts.
  4. Support the rear compartment lid.
  5. Complete the following steps in order to relieve the tension on the torque rod (2):
    5.1. Insert the J 39384-3 in the hinge (1).
    5.2. Insert the J 39384-10 over the end of the torque rod (2).
  6. Remove the torque rod (2) from the adjusting notches.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the torque rod (2) between the hinge (1) and the shelf.

    Important: Properly seat the torque rod between the rear shelf and the hinge assembly.

  2. Slide the torque rod (2) into the hinge (1). Secure the rod with the retainer.
  3. Open and close the rear compartment lid in order to confirm that the torque rod (2) is seated properly.

     

  4. Install the hinge retaining bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Insert the torque rod into the adjustment notch:
    5.1. Insert the J 39384-3 in the hinge.
    5.2. Insert the J 39384-10 over the end of the torque rod.
  6. Adjust the rear compartment lid to the desired tension.
  7. Install the trim panel between the rear seat and the rear window.
