Customer Question

Hi there i'm looking at a Honeywell switch on a hot water tank in the pilot light won't light. I looked through the window and I don't even see a spark when I try and the white reset button won't reset
JA: How long has this been going on? And how severe is the problem?
Customer: Not sure I think my mom said it only happened once before and they hit the reset button and it fired up
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: I like to try to have hot water for Thanksgiving tomorrow so yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: Not that I can think of

Hey Cole are you still there ?
Expert:  cole replied 9 days ago.

ok so thats a newer looking tank you shouldent have to take the face off of it. so there is know spark on these they are electronic ignition. with this type of new valve it should be giving you an error code or blinking light error code. one thing i would do is try and call that american water heater number. if it was older i could walk you through it but try that 1-855 number and they are very good usually. i wish i could help more. do you see an error code.

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
No error code.... It only has a light that would blink and there is no light at all,
Expert:  cole replied 9 days ago.

it could just need a new ignitor but you need to see for sure. american should be able to easily diagnose i would have to be there to run test. ok so if its not giving a blinking code you really need to call them.

if it is under 6 years old they might even send you parts for free.

Expert:  cole replied 9 days ago.

if that number does not get you through try and look up A.O smith tech support they are who make american water heaters.

Expert:  cole replied 9 days ago.

18005271953 is a number i found they claim even after normal business hours.

Expert:  cole replied 9 days ago.

be near the tank when you call. they will want model and most importantly the serial number off the unit.

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
Ok thank u
Expert:  cole replied 9 days ago.

if you have a multi-meter have that handy they may want you to test it.

Expert:  cole replied 9 days ago.

I hope they get you fixed up. Have a good holiday. wish it was a little older so i could walk you through it better.

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
Well I got the pilot to light but won't stay lit. So need to check the voltage to the Cupler
Customer: replied 9 days ago.
fortunately I don't have a multimeter
Customer: replied 9 days ago.
Either way it won't stay lit what else could I do see that the switch or the whole burner
Expert:  cole replied 8 days ago.

Usually its the thermal couple not often does a new gas valve go out. the thermal couple activates the gas valve to open so if your pilot is lit and not opening the gas valve its usually a cheap try to replace thermal couple.
