We have the constant noise of water running through pipes

Customer Question

Hi, We have the constant noise of water running through pipes (like after the toilet is flushed and the tank refills). I've checked the loft cold water tank and that appears to be working correctly.
JA: How long has this been going on? And how severe is the problem?
Customer: A few weeks and its not severe - its more noticeable at night when things are quieter but its constant
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: it depends what the problem is
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: The tank isn't overflowing. The heating thermostat has been turned right down so only the hot water has been coming on twice a day. I can hear water running in the main incoming pipe as if there's a tap on somewhere but there isn't

Hello my name isWade and I look forward to helping you!

Hi Wade

This a common issue with toilets. It's called phantom flushing or ghost flushing. It's either from a faulty seal at the flapper or a bad fill valve. First thing I need to know is how often does it happen?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Its constant

Expert:  WCohn replied 2 months ago.

Oh. So you aren't sure it's the toilet?

Expert:  WCohn replied 2 months ago.

You constantly hear water running, but can't find anything running?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Yes

Are you fed by a meter at a well?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

No, mains water

Expert:  WCohn replied 2 months ago.

It sounds to me like you have a significant water leak. Do you have a crawl space, a basement or is your house on a concrete slab?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Concrete slab

Expert:  WCohn replied 2 months ago.

That's the worst option. Dang. I'd conta a leak detection company. The ones I like to use are the ones who fill the system with an energy gas like helium and use a gas sniffer to locate the leak. They can more accurately pinpoint it's location so you don't do more demolition than needed.

Do you have any questions about that?

Are you still with me???

Expert:  WCohn replied 2 months ago.

Are you still needing help?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Hi, apologies but I had to leave after your "Dang" message so I couldn't respond. However, it seems to be a final word on the subject with your recommendation that I get someone in to check for a leak. What follows that?

Thanks

Get a leak detection company. Someone who can use gas to find it. Much more accurate

I'd appreciate a five star rating for my time. Good luck.
