Hi my name is ***** ***** I have been in the plumbing field for 20 years. I will be glad to help you today. Can you tell what is leaking? Is it leaking from piping or from the wall of the water heater?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
it appears to be leaking from the small internal tank
the tank is wrapped in some type of insulation blanket with sealant...you can feel the puddle of water in between the small tank and insulation blanket
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

Are you able to remove the blanket and inspect further to see what is leaking?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I would have to cut the blanket and there are 2 thin wires wrapped around that appear to aid in holding the blanket in place...I would have to cut the wire also...
do you want me to cut the wires and blanket?
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

First will you give me the model number so that I am sure what model you have?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Is there a pipe extending down from the side? Yes you would have to remove the blanket to certainly assess what is leaking.

Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

I am also depending on you to know what is beyond your comfort level and handiness. Is this something that you feel would be something you could fix on your own with some direction?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
theren is a pipe on the side of the tank that appears to be the high pressure relief valve...
there is also a pipe coming out of the very bottom of the tank...from the center bottom...so it safe to cut the 2 wires...right?
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I am pretty handy...not uncomfortable yet!
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

Yes, I am unfamiliar with putting a blanket on this model. Seems kind of afterthoughtish. Is the water coming from the relief valve? Is the water heater still under warranty?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
not coming from relief valve. water heater at least 8 years old, not sure about warranty
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

Well, it may be a warranty issue. Hopefully you registered it. It has a 20 year heat exchanger warranty. Did you register the warranty?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I do not know if I registered the warranty...
Would they have a record? How can I find out?
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

I am not sure about that. Do you want to call them tomorrow and find out? 1-***-***-**** 8am - 4:30pm CST

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
is that my only option?
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

No, but why not see if it will be repaired for free? I would say to remove the blanket and inspect what is leaking and also call them tomorrow before doing anything. Let me know what you find when you get the blanket off.

Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

I mean for you to take the blanket off now and tell me what you find.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
ok...let me see...bottom of the blanket is difficult to access
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

Ok

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
it appears that the tank is 2 pieces that are somehow clamped together...like a pot with a lid.
There is a flange looking type of ring that goes around the tank...with perhaps a gasket too.
The flange has a lot of corrosion/mineral deposits along sections of it...and there looks like a small stream of water coming from between the tank and the flange
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

Will you post a picture of it?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Do you have a cell number I can send it too?
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

We could do a phone consultation but that costs a bit more. I wouldn't recommend that yet. I am not sure it would be beneficial at this point. Most just post the picture to the chat.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Here it is
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

Will you post another a little farther away? That is a bit too close.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
how is this?
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

You do have a leak on the heat exchanger. I hope you registered the warranty.

Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

If you have the receipt then it will not matter if you registered it or not.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
ok I will call tomorrow...also looking for receipt but no luck so far
Expert:  Mike R. replied 2 months ago.

Very good

Expert:  Mike R. replied 1 month ago.

I haven't heard from you. Was the information I provided helpful?

Expert:  Mike R. replied 1 month ago.

I see you still have not positively rated my service. Although the only way that I get paid is when my service is positively rated, it also tells me that you have not received the information that you were seeking to find a solution to your issue. Will you let me know what affect the information I provided had on the issue at hand and how else I may be able to help?
