Customer Question

My husband fitted a new kitchen nov/ dec 15 - we have a floor drain that was covered up for 5 years with a plastic bag and on occasions there would be a smell and my husband would top up the water as we have underfloor heating - after fitting a dishwasher in Dec I have a constant foul smell that appears under the sink cupboard - this weekend he fitted a trap to the dishwasher outlet but the smell seems worse now !
JA: Thanks. Can you give me any more details about your issue?

There are basically only 2 ways a foul sewer odor can get into your kitchen. Either from a fixture drain that isn't trapped or the trap has dried out or from a broken drain vent or a trap that isn't vented properly. If a trap isn't vented then the trap can siphon out which allows the sewer odor into the house. A dishwasher pumps out water under pressure making the trap more likely to siphon out if it isn't vented properly.
