could be a number of things. Could be as easy as a loose electrical connection. If you can smack the heater and it runs better for a small length of time that tells me that there is a loose connection somewhere or the unit is dirty and needs to be serviced. I suggest going on the internet and typing in the make and model # ***** looking at the owners manual. Go to the troubleshooting pages an you might have a better understanding on what parts need to be cleaned and where
