This is an indication that you had an ignition failure. If you want to diagnose the possible cause I need you to unplug the heater, wait a minute then plug it back in, then watch what it does. Does the fan on top start? do you see a glow from the burner chamber after the fan starts? does the burner fire up then go out?
Are any of the lights on?
If you're sure the outlet has power (plug in a lamp to be sure) and nothing is happening like you describe then the gas control valve is probably defective. Did you or anyone else turn off the switch at the top of the heater on the fan assembly?
Sounds like a bad gas control valve. How old is the heater?
What is the brand and the serial number
Not the gas valve the water heater. It's on the rating tag
Ok, it looks like the heater is out of warranty but it's not that old so replacing the gas valve would probably be worth the expense
Still sounds like a valve with a glitch. It will probably only get worse.
