I have a gas hot water heater that was bought from ace

i have a gas hot water heater that was bought from ace hardware in 2007 and has worked just fine is still working fine but it has plastic melting from the inside of the exterior casing onto the panels that protect the pilot light. what is going on?

Sounds like the burner is running too hot. Could be too much gas pressure to the burner or maybe a restriction in the flue passage. This is not a safe operating condition. You need to have it checked out. You might be able to check the flue yourself. You'll need an expensive gas pressure gauge to check the gas manifold pressure. That may be a job for a pro
