if pilot light is staying lit then not the thermal pile it would be the gas valve if you have a mono miter you check gas pressure on outlet side of valve

thermo and pilot ignite fine with match but cant let go of button ,

pilot will not stay lit after releasing button generally means bad thermal couple do you have a voltmeter?
Expert:  Jerry's Advanced Plumbing replied 5 years ago.
you can check millivolts on thermal couple should be 25 if it lower then 17 this could be problem if not it is the gas valve if you have a thermal pile the millivolts will be 450 or above 750 max these are needed to hold electric magnet open in gas valve if you have these millivolt readying then it is gas valve
