My gas hot water heater keeps shutting down. I relight the pilot light and it turns on and starts to heat for a while then it just shuts off again!

Change the thermocouple and the your pilot light will stay on its getting weak and cannot generate signal to keep pilot light going. It the device that pilot flame hits against and can be bought at any home center
