Hello & Welcome to Just Answer,
Sorry to hear of the issue you are having with your phones.
May I ask:
1) to VERIFY the Model Number of the phone system you are working with?
I only ask because it appears that the CS6919-2 does NOT have a built-in answering machine.
2) Do you have a SEPARATE answering machine connected to your phone line?
3) What phone service provider (phone company) you have for this phone line?
Thanks

the model number is ***** I apparently did not read the packaged box closely enough. I noted that the phone had caller ID which I already had on the old phone so I assumed incorrectly that the new phone would have "answering"capabilitity like the old one did. My mistake, sorry. Paul A.Steele

I will probably buy a seperate answering machine and connect to this phone. PAS

Hi Paul,
Sorry for the delayed response - some family business came up.
If you RECENTLY purchased the system - which I believe can only be found at a certain store - you MAY be able to return it FOR CREDIT so that you can get a different system that DOES have a built-in answering system.
I say this because separate answering systems are becoming more and more "hard to find" items, and often cost more than a phone system with built-in answering system.
I have a link to the search results from Amazon below, where I searched for "vtech cordless phone with answering machine", and that should give you a good idea of what is out there - and the cost.
