I have a Panasonic phone model kx-tga1018 & lost the manual. How do I set up caller id.

Make: Panasonic
Model: KX-TGA1016

Already Tried:
Went through menu but when call comes in it reads out of area private caller

The caller ID should not require any special setup steps though, it is an automatic feature by default.

If you are getting a reading of private or out of area, it is either because you don't have an active subscription to caller id service on that phone line, or the incoming caller has blocked their ID.

Did you previously have working caller ID data on another phone model?

Ok, that would explain the issue with this phone then.

Your best option at this point would be to contact your telephone company, and have them check if caller ID is a feature of your phone subscription package, and if not, to have them add it.
