I have been on senna laxatives years. I started taking them

Customer Question

I have been on senna laxatives for 15 years. I started taking them when I started taking Zoloft, amitriptyline, lamictal and clonazapam. U know these medications can cause constipation. I realize my bowels have become lazy, I have to increase my dose of senna periodically. I need to get off these any suggestions ?

I would really like to try a clean eating diet hoping that may help
Expert:  Drugdad replied 1 year ago.

Hi, thanks for the question. Yes, you are right. Prolonged use of senna can lead to dependence. Your best option is to start adding more fiber to your diet. With enough fiber in your diet you will probably wouldn't need any laxative.

Do you think I should see a gastroenterologist
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
what kinda foods would you introduce?
Expert:  Drugdad replied 1 year ago.

Oat, wheat, brown rice, beans, nuts and fruits. Don't forget a little exercise would go a long way too.

Expert:  Drugdad replied 1 year ago.

If you try these lifestyle modifications and there is no change, you should definitely see your gastroenterologist.
