My bone density scan was -4. Have been taking Boniva for several years and large doses of calcium with V-D. Have been advised to begin taking Forteo. Some of the articles I have read are not too favorable--such as bone cancer in rats and you can only take Forteo for 18 months and what happens then. Have been on Lovenox for 2 years as I have a history of blood clots--had one pulmonary embolism. Now I am giving myself Fragmin shots for the blood clots. Would appreciate your input. E. Cox

Hi, let me help you with this
It is my understanding, you are changing forteo for boniva, and fragmin for lovenox right?
Because of safety concerns, forteo is only limited to 2 years of lifetime use
Certain literatures does point out that forteo may increase the risk of osteosarcoma, a secondary malignancy but percentage is quite small
I am currently taking Boniva once a month. Have taken Lovenox shots for two years. Have just started Fragmin shots instead of Lovenox. My doctor thinks I should begin taking Forteo shots for my bones.
both drugs have interaction, it states that concurrent use of both drug can lead to impairs the anabolic activity of forteo in trabecular bone and reduces the beneficial effects of forteo on cortical bone
I am interested in Reclast and Prolia. How do they compare to Forteo?
You may not qualify for prolia because Prolia received FDA approval for osteoporosis prophylaxis in women at high risk for bone fractures after receiving adjuvant aromatase inhibitor therapy
What drugs having an interaction are you referring to? And the use of what drugs can lead to impair the anabolic activity of forteo?
Okay let me clarify
Boniva impair the activity of forteo
Please explain "adjuvant aromatase inhibitor therapy.
it is a class of drug used to treat breast cancer
As for Reclast, its advantage is the once a year treatment.
Back to forteo. If I begin the forteo shots, I will cease taking the Boniva.
It makes sense to only use forteo
Any thing else I can help you with today?
Can you give me more info on Reclast. Are there any negatives?
yes, it does have an extensive list of side effect just like forteo
I will provide you with most of the serious ones
Renal impairment, atrial fibrillation, bronchospasm, pantocytopenia, hyperhidrosis, hypotension
Back to forteo--what do you take when the 2 years is up that you have been taking forteo?
Your doctor have to switch you back to a different drug like boniva
I hope I have answered your questions, but if you have additional information you need to clarify or ask, feel free to ask
Of the two forteo and reclast, which would you recommend if you were me? Would if help if you had a list of the drugs I am now taking?

Hi,Based on the list of all these drugs, DalteparinFurosemideMorphinePotassium SaltsPrednisonePropranololVitamin EZoledronic Acid or TeriparatideTiotropiumOcuvite® LuteinForteo looks better because it does not interact with any of the drugs but you can only be on it for 2 years. You already know this.Reclast when combine with furosemide can cause or lead to hypocalcemia, this is definitely what you want with your history of osteoporosis.
