Dr Mike, PharmD :

Hi, thanks for the question...

Dr Mike, PharmD :

I have two different manufacturers on my pharmacy shelf, both sets were received recently from the warehouse and list expiration dates of 2011 and 2012. So, it would seem that benzonotate likely is within expiration for a year or two.

Dr Mike, PharmD :

That said, expiration dates are typically the point at which the drug loses about 10% of its potency. Benzonotate doesn't turn toxic necessarily, but it will be less effective than fresh capsules (but perhaps more effective than anything you can get over the counter.)

Dr Mike, PharmD :

Anything stronger would require a prescription.

Dr Mike, PharmD :

A humidifier can help, as well as ibuprofen 600-800mg three to four times daily (with your prescriber's OK).

Dr Mike, PharmD :

Cough drops or hard candies can help lubricate the throat and provide additional relief.

Dr Mike, PharmD :

If you have anything further, please do ask. I wish you the best -Dr Mike.
