My name is XXXXX XXXXX X have been a Vet tech for 30+ years. I have special interest in Exotics.
Can you tell me if Gizmo has eatine anything today?
Is he pawing at his mout?
Any strring or stargazing?
Any weight loss?
Any hair loss?
What type of diet is he on?
Cout he have gotten a hold and ingested a non food item?
Is he urinating and passing stool?
I havnt been very concious of what he's been eating thus far. Now I'm watching him like a hawk. He wont eat his treats. Which is not right he would eat a million if he had the chance. I changed theyre cage this morning and there is stool in there.
He seemes to be like chewing on his tongue. Like he is eating but nothing.I dont know what you mean by stargazing.
No weight loss. He was eating regularly till today. No visible hairloss, i heard to check by his tail.
He eats his Living World Extrusion Ferret food..
Sorry it is taling so long there have been several emergencies at one time. What I would like to do is start by taking a little Pancake syrup or karo syrup and gubbing some on his gums. Hypoglycemia and Insulinoma can be a serious issue in ferrets. The Syrup should help balance the glucose levels. I would also like you to start him on a duck soup diet. The easiest one is to give some Gerbers chicken and gravy baby food. Ferrets have to have food going in. These are further recipies for Duck soup Diets:
For fluids, I wouldlike to see you start giving him some Pedialyte Infant Electrolyte replacer. This will help prevent dehydration. He does need to see a Vet asap. I can locate some emergency Vets for you with a City , State ande Zip code.
I am also going to give you links for Exotic and Ferret Vets who can treat Gizmo: http://www.aemv.org/vetlist.cfm
The problem we have here is he has been normal until today. I always worry when a ferret vomits there they may have ingested a foriegn body, there could be a GI infection or something wrong with the food. Please let me know if you have further questions. I will be happy to try and locate an ER Vet. They can give fluids if needed and further emergency treatment. Joan
