my goldfish which is approx 4 years old has been growing a white growth on his back just behind the top fin and before the tail. It is slowly getting bigger over the course of a year. I put "wardley promethyasul" into the water 3 times and this has not helped. The fish is still swimming well and has an appetite. Could this be a cancerous growth? What should I do? Thanks Mandy

Hello Mandy,I apologize that no one has responded to your question sooner. Different experts come online at various times. I just came online and saw your question. Some additional information may help me to answer your question.Does the growth look waxy? How big is it?Thank you.Anna
Hi Anna,
The growth is pinky white colour and I have just noticed a distinct red blood vessel on the top part of it (I haven't noticed this before). The growth is roughly the size of a kidney bean. Hope this helps. mandy
Thank you for getting back to me, Mandy. A growth this size, and with a blood vessel in it, is most likely a tumor. The fact that it has been slowly growing over the period of a year is further evidence. There won't be any home treatment that will make the growth go away. Goldfish are prone to both benign and cancerous growths. The only way to know which this is would be to consult an aquatic vet. The vet would also be able to remove the growth. If you want to pursue this, the following link will take you to a directory of vets. Just click on a name for their contact information.http://www.aquavetmed.info/index.cfm?PID=6If you don't wish to see a vet, it would be best not to treat the fish with medications that aren't needed. They can weaken the immune system. Goldfish can live for years with such tumors, especially if the tumor is benign. If you ahve more questions, let em know by clicking on REPLY.
