Customer Question

3 weeks ago my husband caught some crappie and bluegill at the lake. He put them in our pond. Now we keep finding dead fish floating on the pond. Could it be connected.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear of this unfortunate incident. Yes, it could certainly be connected, and probably is. Any time new fish from a different location are introduced to a pond, there is the risk of introducing a disease or parasite. Whenever adding new fish, it's best to quarantine them in an isolation pool for at least 30 days to make sure they are healthy. Even then, they can introduce diseases and parasites that the resident fish are not immune to. Fish can develop a resistance to such disease organisms in their own area, so the new fish can be carrying something which will make the other fish sick, even though the new ones seem healthy.

If your pond is large, there is probably nothing you can do at this point. If it is a small garden pond, and you can tell me the symptoms the fish exhibit before they die, we may be able to figure out what is wrong, and begin a treatment. That isn't practical in large ponds.

If you have more questions, let me know by clicking on REPLY. I hope that most of your fish will be able to fight this off and survive.
