I adopted a stray dog in Aruba in Jan 2010. The Aruban vet

Resolved Question:

I adopted a stray dog in Aruba in Jan 2010. The Aruban vet clinic determined she had ehrlichia and started treatment of doxycycline. I continued the doxy after I brought her home. I found that she was pregnant and delivered 7 very healthy puppies in Mar. 2010. Her tests for the disease are negative thanks to the 5 weeks of doxy. Is it possible for her puppies to also have the ehrlichia from their mother ? Should they be tested ? They are all adopted and doing well.

Hello,

Congrats on the adopted dog and her babies :)

It is possible for one species of Ehrlichia to be passed to the puppies through the placenta, so it would be smart to have the puppies tested and monitored. Please see the following websites for more information.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Good luck with your dog, I hope she and the puppies do well :)
