My 6 year old rabbit appears to have bulging eye. Is there anything I can do for her and is she in much pain? She has stopped eating
Optional Information: Age: 6; Female; Breed: domestic white Already Tried: erythromycin ointment, warm compresses
I'm sorry to hear about your rabbit. If possible, please take her to the vet as soon as possible. She's probably in some degree of pain, and painful rabbits don't eat well. If the decreased appetite (or know appetite) continues, she may develop GI stasis, which can be fatal. If the eye itself is bulging/swollen, it could be infected, inflamed, or have glaucoma. If the eye is bulging because it is being pushed out - there may be a retrobulbar abscess (most likely), a tumor, or other infection. I have seen a rabbit with cancer in his chest develop this from blockage of venous drainage (there is a large venous sinus behind the eyes). She may need surgery or oral antibiotics and definitely pain meds and supportive care. Please let me know how she does - I'm pulling for her. I used to have rabbits, too. Sincerely, Dr. Devlin
