Customer Question

I Have had my my guinea pig for 3 weeks, I bought 2 girls. One of them is thriving, but the other one is very lethargic and exceptionally thin. I think she has lost weight since we got her. She seems to be eating and drinking. Her breathing appears to be laboured, and she bites a lot.

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Female; Breed: guinea pig

Already Tried:
She was at the vet a couple of weeks ago because she had a weepy eye, the vet thought she might have had a reaction to her bed shavings. I have taken no action since then.

Hello,

This sounds like there may be some type of infection working in your Cavy. I would separate her from the other cavy. Start to give an added amount of Vitamin C either in the water or what you are feeding. I would start to make sure to use some Pedialyte to help with dehydration. The biting is a sign of not feeling well. This may be an Upper Respiratory Infection or it may be coming from the teeth. The teeth on a cavy can have some problems since the are open eneded and can grow up into the sinus cavity. The bedding you should be using is carfresh bedding since the cedar and pine can be toxic to your cavy. I would suggest getting some Oxbow Critical care to help to get your cavy through this. I would suggest a Vet visit since if this is an Infection the vet may want to administer Baytril. Joan
