The fleas prefer to live below 5,000 feet; however, in 1999, during research in the Great Smoky Mountains with elevations of up to 6,011 feet, eight species of fleas were collected.

Ticks prefer elevations between 3,000-9,000 feet as reported by the State of Nevada Dept of Agriculture.
