my parakeet has been extremely itchy and loosing a lot of feathers in the past couple of months. He was born last June and I don't know if he had mites at that time, but if so, would they still be alive? Mite are pretty common in budgies (especially scaly face mites) but other causes should be ruled out by a veterinarian. Giardia could be dianosed or even a bacteria infection. All require different treatments which must be prescribed by a veterinarian. Nothing over the counter will alleviate his symptoms. Testing is a must if you don't want to spend extra time and money (and possibly risking the health of your bird) on inappropriate treatments.
