There are a couple of things that should be causing concern for you.

First, if he has not seen the vet for a fecal exam lately, you need to do that to rule out a parasite problem for the thinness.

Second -

If she has been boarded at a kennel recently, it could be kennel cough, a common respiratory illness that is highly contagious. Even if animals have been vaccinated, they will still get it if they are exposed.

Aside from that, tracheal problems and heart problems can also cause coughing, as can a general virus.

Any time that I hear of an older dog coughing, I immediately think of a heart problem, especially if the dog is not on heartworm prevention.

You should be pretty concerned. I think that you should make an appointment with your vet as soon as you are able.

Let me know if you need more details or do not understand.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: I need to know if there is any Veterinarian's or programs that can help me with his treatment's that he need's. Also, any place that could possible work with a payment plan arrangement. I am asking this because I am scheduled to have two surgeries this summer and every bit of money we could save would be great that way io can put it towrds his recovery. I just lost a minature jack Russel Terrior about a month ago and I do not want to put Pinto or the ten week old American Bull dog I just recieved for Mother's Day at risk as well. Soo please, if you can help me with some info. for any programs that do such things please help. Maybe a good samaritan vet. in San Antonio, Texas. I am an animal lover all around. Please Help Tammy!!! - Mrs. Gomez.

I don't know of any places in your area specifically but there are some national groups that might be able to help you.

There are some groups that can help pay for the treatment if you need assistance.

Check out these links and see if they can help. I recommend contacting uan first. They have a great staff and people respond quickly.

Here are some organizations that help individuals as well.

Help-A-Pet http://www.help-a-pet.org Focuses on helping low
income individuals with all kinds of vet work, including preventative care and non-emergency treatments. They work with all kinds of animals.

IMOM http://www.imom.org Focuses on emergency medical care for dogs and cats that require expensive treatment to live.

United Animal Nations http://www.uan.org/ Focuses on disasters
and helping low income individuals or rescuers. They work with all kinds of animals.

  • I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there. Alice H. Jacksonville, Fl.
