Customer Question

we have a 16 week old male boxer, last monday he started limping, when my wife came home for lunch to let him out he was crying in pain and he could not stand, the vet took x-rays and he said he thinks it is a hair line fracture, started him on pain killers and a anti-inflamotory , On wednesday he woke up with his leg swollen three times the normal size, took him the vet he now has a 102 degree temp, i asked the vet if this could be caused by a insect sting, he also took a blood sample, his white blood count was over 20 started him on a steriod, and antibiotic, the leg is now back to it's normal size but he still will not put weight on that leg, the vet said there might be a tear in his joint capsule which caused the swelling, he said the next step is surgery , any suggestions dave

Has your vet ruled out HOD? Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy is a disease of growing pups that is extremely painful and the dog runs a fever etc.
http://www.cah.com/library/hod.html talks about a new treatment for this problem.
Also did your puppy just have his last puppy shots? A friend of mine with Weimeraners says that she knows of dogs in her breed that were diagnosed with HOD but when they were necropsied (testing was done by a lab in the UK) distemper virus was found in the joint capsules of the pups that were previously thought to have HOD.
This is one site that has a variety of info on the HOD disease http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dhod.html
Boxers are known to be among the breeds likely to have this problem.
If you know the dog's breeder (and bought directly from the breeder) you might want to talk to that person about this situation to see if they have any insights based on the hereditary health background of the parents.
I hope this helps you!

Do you remember if the puppy had any injury to that leg? Does the lameness only affect that one leg?

How is the puppy doing now?

I do not feel surgery is an option right now, but would like to hear how the puppy is now.

BTW, a 102 degree temp is normal.

  • I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there. Alice H. Jacksonville, Fl.
