rat: hind end..i cleaned his cage..i gave him a bath with baby shampoo

Customer Question

I have a rat who is about 2 to 2 1/2 years. recently he has looked dirty from behind the neck to his hind end. today i cleaned his cage (which i do every three to four days) and i gave him a bath with baby shampoo. i was wearing a yellow green shirt and noticed when i was done that on my shirt was a lot of very small brownish wiggling things. What are they? How do i get rid of them? Are they spreadable to my other animals (housed seperatly, rabbit, hedgehog) or me and my children?

Your rat may have a tapeworm. If the brownish wiggling things were very small and looked like little segments of rice, and sticky looking they could be the segments of tapeworms, or they could be larvae from other parasites. I would keep your rat separated from your other animals, and not allow your children to handle him, until you definitely find out what the parasite is.

Below are several websites I found that list different parasites and how to get rid of them. You could also contact your local vet and ask about this. Just keep the cage as clean as possible, and there is also information on the best way to disinfect the cage of your rat.

Some parasites will not spread to you or your children, but some can.

Hope this information helps. Does your rat itch a lot? He may have fleas and these may be small flea larvae.

Reply to Elena Marie's Post: I went to the sites that you posted. they were informitive. But i dont believe its fleas he is not itching. He had pnuemonia that was treated but had damaged his lungs. he isnt losing wait so the internal parasites arent a thouhgt. His hair has lost its softness and he is also loosing patches of it. but im not seeing any lesions. the best comparison i can give is the bug was about as small as pen point and is a brown color. he is not taken outside and really isnt expossed to much. please help

Oh, these bugs sound really creepy. The following website lists some bugs and parasites, and though, none may even have anything to do with what your poor guy has, the idea I wanted to give to you, is that if you are near a teaching university or somewhere that you could take a sample of these "creatures", that maybe they could identify what these bugs are.

Also, check out the next few websites that might help you figure out what these critters could be that are on your rat:

Also, if your rat had pneumonia, you definitely want to find out if these bugs could be "blood suckers" and could possibly cause your rat to become anemic and he could die from that.

God bless and good luck!

  • I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there. Alice H. Jacksonville, Fl.
