Gouldian Finches: female is acting lithargic and hiding her head..cage

Customer Question

I have Gouldian Finches and the female is acting lithargic and hiding her head. Her colors are not as bright and they are not on the bottom of the cage. I just put them in with other Finches. There eyes are still bright and they are not sneezing. But they just don’t act as active as they have. They are still eating and drinking. The hiding and there colors do bother me are they sick or am I just just being over anxious?

The websites below have some good information on them, that you might want to check out. These birds do appear to be a more delicate species, and I do not think you are being over anxious, so you may want to get them checked out at your vet's for any possible infection.

God bless and good luck!

HEALTH

One concern with the Gouldian finch (especially those kept outdoors) is the air sac mite. These little creatures are practically certain to affect any Gouldian sooner or later—sometimes even birds that are kept strictly indoors! The good news is that they can be eradicated (your vet will help you). I think it is very important to monitor all Gouldian finches regularly for air sac mites. Periodically, I catch my birds and hold them to my ear to listen for any clicking or rattling sounds that often indicate mites. All in all mites are more of an inconvenience that a threat so long as they are detected early and treated appropriately. Don't let this deter you from owning these charming birds.

  • I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there. Alice H. Jacksonville, Fl.
