Customer Question

I have a two year old male dragon who has been getting sick for two weeks, not eating, eyes turning yellow and scales yellow. he is now dehydrated.
I put him in warm water, thinking he had fecal matter stuck. As I began to pull I realized it looks more like anatomy, attached by skin, yet what is sticking out is hard/dry.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear your dragon is having this serious problem. You have taken appropriate first aid measures. I wish I could give you more remedies, but unfortunately, this is a situation where there are no home treatments.

The body part attached by skin is most likely intestine. When it comes out of the vent, it is called a prolapse. When it happens, it is a medical emergency, and must be attended to right away by a vet. A beardie with a prolapse cannot digest food, and so will not eat. Eventually organ systems will shut down. Yellow eyes and scales may indicate liver failure.

I feel bad to have to give you sad news, but I believe you deserve honesty. Once a prolapsed organ becomes dried out, there is only a slim chance even a vet can help. However, this condition will cause a slow death. I think the best thing to do would be to make an appointment with a reptile vet. The vet can evaluate your dragon to determine if treatment is possible. If not, the kindest decision may be to have the vet humanely end your beardie's suffering. This link will take you to a directory of reptile vets:

I am so sorry to give you bad news. I hope I'm wrong, or that you're mistaken and the thing sticking out isn't a body part. The only way to find out is to have a vet examine your dragon. If you would like any additional information or have more questions please don’t hesitate to ask! There's no additional fee for follow up questions. I'll be hoping for a good outcome.

Anna
