Customer Question

Thank you! Shes lethargic and cold to touch
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The veterinarian will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name and age?
Customer: She's also shaking
JA: Is there anything else important you think the veterinarian should know about the dog?

First: what is her name, what breed ?

When did this start (hours, days)?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
This started about an hour ago. This is the second time she's done this. I took her to the vet the first time, about a month ago, and she said she thought she may have had a small seizure. She ran some test and everything came back ok. I took her a urine sample later and never heard anything.
Her name is ***** ***** is a pit bull

When we first noticed this earlier, she was swaying back and forth and just laid over on me. When I got her to stand up, she was walking funny and seemed very skidish
Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

Did she look dazed and confused when this started?

Did you see her have a seizure?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
No,
Customer: replied 6 months ago.
She was just shaking like she was cold. I've never seen a dog have a seizure though, I'm not sure what to look for
Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

She may have had a petit mal seizure which dose not have the thrashing. Or she may have had an atonic seizure where is no trashing and the animal may lose consciousness.

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

What you should do is leave her alone until she recovers. Stimulus like you holding her may prolong the seizure.

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

You should keep a journal of all these episodes: lenght of time (from beginning to acting normal), what she was doing just prior to episode, and date.

You may notice a pattern developing.

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

If these episodes happen regularly or more than once monthly she should be put on a trial of seizure medication to see if it stops the episodes.

Is she back to normal now?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
No she's not.
Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

Seizures are abnormal brain activity. Usually you may see her get "spacey".

This might be followed by a period of confusion.

Or she might fall down and begin thrashing while laying on her side. During this time don't touch her as it may become worse. But make sure she cannot hurt herself falling down stairs or bumping into furniture.

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

Is she any better than an hour ago? Sometimes it takes several hours to become normal again.

What was she doing the last time and how long did it last?

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

Are you still there?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
She's still lethargic. She's just laying on the couch and won't move
Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

Any better than an hour ago?

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

You seem to be gone.

Keep track of how long it takes her to get back to normal.

Give this info to your vet on Monday. She will probably start her on some seizure medication ( depending on how long ago she had her other one and the severity).

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
Thank you
Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 6 months ago.

If she has more seizures that are a lot more severe this weekend you may

have to take her to an emergency clinic where she can be given iv anti-seizure medication.

I hope that this has given you some helpful info. There is nothing you can do at home to prevent this from happening.

I will still be checking my emails for an hour.

If you have any more questions i am here to help.

How is Kona doing. I hope that she was alright by this morning.

Be sure to take her to your vet in the next few days. She might have to go on seizure medication.

Best to you and Kona.
