Customer Question

My 11 year old yellow lab has been coughing and gags. He had his checkup in March. He was tested for heart worms and was clear. He has a healthy appetite and other than the cough seems normal.
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Coughing can be worrying. The Veterinarian will know what you should do. What is the dog's name?
Customer: Cooper
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Cooper?
Customer: No. He doesn't get the exercise he should but nothing has changed except I have put him on a new food for an older dog.

I will look at his gums in the morning. His cough is not limited to night time though

Did you have a chance to take a look at the videos? If so, did it look like any of these?

I looked at the congestive heart one. Even tho he is not as small breed I have had a suspicion that this might be the problem. How is this treated and diagnosed?
Expert:  PitRottMommy replied 3 months ago.

If you're able to look at all of them, please do. Especially the laryngeal paralysis video, which is more common in labs.

Large breed dogs can acquire heart disease, as well. If this is CHF, it's typically diagnosed through examination, chest x-rays and/or cardiac ultrasound. Medications are prescribed according to the symptoms the pet has including medication to improve contractility, lower heart rate, remove excess fluid from the body, etc.
