Hi, this is Dr. Gabby. Kennel cough is just a common name for infectious tracheobronchitis. They do not have to be kenneled for them to pick it up. You can bring the virus in on your shoes. Or a sick dog could have coughed somewhere they come in contact with. Like if a sick dog walked by your yard or you took them for a walk.
You can try giving them plain Robitussin cough syrup for the cough.
1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of dog every 6 hours as needed.
Use the human plain Robitussin cough syrup with the active ingredient Dextromethorphan.
It normally resolves in 7-10 days. It is highly contagious to other dogs but not humans.
Signs you need to see a vet are:
Coughing up phlegm
Not eating or drinking for 24 hours
Yellow nasal or eye drainage
Pale or purple gum color.
They should rest until they are better.
