Customer Question

I have a 15 yr old bichon who, in the past hour, has started smacking his gums, become restless and has a slight tremble. His tummy was a bit hard, so I've been rubbing his back and stomach. He's not interested in water right now. He's settled down a bit, but I'm not sure what else to do.

Hello and welcome, I am Dr. B and would like to help you today.

Now your lad's signs tell us that he has gut upset and nausea. Provided he hasn't eaten anything harmful ( an urgent situation when they do), you can try to settle this with a bit of supportive care. To start, you can give an antacid ( ie Pepcid, Zantac) and the try offering a light diet ( ie rice with chicken, white fish, or scrambled egg). If he settles, we are happy. Though any vomiting or if he keeps refusing food and water, then we'd want to plan to have him seen once his vet is open.

Best wishes,

Dr. B
