During the last few weeks, my beautiful long-haired Chihuahua

Customer Question

During the last few weeks, my beautiful long-haired Chihuahua has had these episodes twice: he suddenly develops a deep "honk-like" sound (that's how I would describe the sound) accompanied by his abdomen and chest violently contracting. Both times these episodes lasted about 5 minutes. At first, I thought he was simply trying to throw up something from his stomach, but he did not. Around the same time he experienced these episodes, he had thrown up what looked like bile (a kind of foamy yellow substance), though it did not happen at the exact same time as the episodes. I showed a video of him having an episode to his vet, and she said she had no idea what that was, but later said it might have been inverse sneezing. Do these symptoms sound familiar to you?

The "honk" represents tracheal (windpipe) involvement in a cough. Such deep coughing can then result in a terminal gag which can cause regurgitation of food or bile from the stomach. Simple respiratory infection such as infectious tracheobronchitis can cause such a honking cough but so can more serious disorders such as a collapsing windpipe and serious cardiopulmonary disorders. Here's what reverse sneezing looks like: Please let me know if this is what you've witnessed.
