Customer Question

My dog has been acting as though she's in pain since Sunday. I've takin her to the vet, X-ray shows a vertebra problem ang lots of gas in her stomach. They gave muscle relaxer med but she's still acting strange. Took her back to vet yesterday did X-ray again, gas gone down took her off medication. Just fed her about three bites of prescription I/d dog food and she's panting walking very slow and moving backwards. I'm at a loss as to what to do for her.

Hello. Thanks for the question.

It sounds like your dog has a disc herniation in the back. This is a common cause of pain in small breed dogs. I typically treat with a combination of an anti-inflammatory (Rimadyl) + something for nerve pain (Gabapentin). I'll also have the dog exercise restricted for 1-2 weeks. Most dogs are improved within 2-3 days, and pretty much normal 5-7 days out.

I think the focus should go back to pain control vs the GI tract.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions
