Customer Question

I have a sick dog with some as yet un-diagnosed liver issue. She has an appointment scheduled for early Monday morning for an ultrasond with a specialist vet. It is midday Sunday and her skin is looking quite yellow... should I go to an emergency vet today, or hold off?

Ideally, your schnoodle should be supported in a hospital setting at this time. IV fluids are essential to establish normal hydration status and electrolyte (sodium, potassium, chloride) serum levels. If she were prescribed oral medications, those should be continued and brought to a 24-hour facility along with her so the attending doctor can continue their administration. Worsening icterus (jaundice) can be a negative prognostic sign when liver pathology exists and so critical care as is available in these facilities is quite important.
