Hello and thank you for using this site to help you. My name is ***** ***** I have owned many Newfoundlands. They do tend to get ear infections either from yeast or bacteria. The gel you are using is not backed by any clinical research so I would not be using that. It can block the transportation of pain signals to the brain and that may be why the dog does not show you pain. The fact that he shakes his head a lot is a good indication of a problem.

There is an over the counter product you can buy on Amazon called Zymox which is for both bacteria and yeast. I have always gotten the double pack and kept one on hand. Having five news at once there was always the chance one would get an ear infection.

here is a link to that http://www.amazon.com/Pet-King-Enzymatic-Solution-Ounces/dp/B0025YOJXS/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1443444259&sr=1-1&keywords=zymox
