My 4 month old 25+lb lab mix ate a cigarette about an hour

Customer Question

My 4 month old 25+lb lab mix ate a cigarette butt about an hour ago. He seems normal but has had 1 loose BM since. Do I just keep an eye on him?

Hi there. My name is ***** ***** I'm happy to help you with your question tonight.

We do worry about nicotine toxicity when a dog eats a cigarette butt. This is because the filter contains a HUGE amount of the toxin as it's designed to catch the nicotine when people smoke.

You can read more about nicotine toxicity here:http://www.petplace.com/article/dogs/first-aid-for-dogs/toxins-poisons/nicotine-toxicity-in-dogs

Since this happened about an hour ago, the best thing to do is to induce vomiting. The way to make that happen is pretty easy and can be found here: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/how-to-induce-vomiting-emesis-in-dogs/page1.aspx

Since as little as 1 butt can cause a toxic reaction, I would induce vomiting.
