Customer Question

I have an 85 pound boxer mix. He frequently chews on plants- especially desert grasses. This evening while walking, he nipped at an oleander, he has never done this before. I immediately stopped him and it didn't appear he ingested any part of the plant. Should I be worried? Are there symptoms I should monitor?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

As long as you don't think he has eaten any of the oleander, we'd not be worried here. Its dogs that ingest not just come into contact with the plant that we worry about. So, Beau's case would be considered low risk of any issue here. Therefore, we do want to monitor him (just to note this plant can cause: GI upset, diarrhea (possibly bloody), sweating, wobbliness, breathing difficulties, tremors, and collapse) but we'd not expect any harm here at all.

Please take care,

Dr. B.
