Aloha! You're speaking with Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. You do deserve the courtesy of a response, however. Significant toxicity can occur in dogs after biting into the metered dose inhalers. Clinical signs of significant overdose may include arrhythmia (tachycardia/fast irregular heart rate and extrasystole), hypertension, fever, vomiting, mydriasis (wide open pupils), tremors, and central nervous system stimulation. Hypokalemia and hypophosphatemia (low serum potassium and low serum phosphorus levels) may occur. If no significant cardiac or nervous system effects are seen, it's handled like other overdoses - decontamination by vomiting and administering activated charcoal. She vomited which should have been helpful. She appears to have developed a fever, however.
The specific pharmacokinetics of this agent have apparently not been thoroughly studied in dogs. In general, albuterol is absorbed rapidly and well after oral administration. Effects occur 30 minutes after oral administration and the duration of effect generally persists for 3-6 hours. I expect that your Golden has already remissed.
Please give me an update on her.
