Hi, my 5lb. chi has CHF and has been doing well on Vetmedin

Hi, my 5lb. chi has CHF and has been doing well on Vetmedin and enlapronil. I had to take him to the ER a few months ago for a bad night of coughing and anxiety, and they gave him Lasix, and he did fine. My vet doesn't want to keep him on the Lasix unless absolutely necessary, and he has been doing on without it. Tonight, he's really bad again, I have no Lasix, can't reach my vet, and the ER is backed up for two hours and won't call in his Lasix without seeing him again. I have HCTZ, 25 mg. can I give him that to get through the night till I can call my vet? What's the dosage?

Dr. Drew :

Hello, thanks for your question today! I am Dr. Drew, and I am a licensed veterinarian. I'll be happy to help you in any way I can.

Dr. Drew :

HCTZ is not nearly as effective as Lasix,

Dr. Drew :

and truth be told, Lasix is the cornerstone of management of CHF, so a patient with confirmed CHF should never be expected to do well without this drug.

Dr. Drew :

WHen HCTZ is dosed in dogs,

Dr. Drew :

the usual range is 1-4mg per kg of body weight, every 12 hours.

Dr. Drew :

a 5 pound dog (approximately 2.2kg), would therefore receive 2.2-8.8mg

Dr. Drew :

so, the maximum dose would be roughly 1/3 of a 25mg tablet of HCTZ.

Dr. Drew :

1/4 tablet would be in the middle of the acceptable dosing range.
