my dog has lyme... he is 70 lbs and is taking 150 mg of doxy twice a day..i think he should be taking 350 mg twice a day from what i have been reading.. he has been on this for two weeks with no improvement.
Optional Information: Type of Animal: mixed bull / boxer./pit Pet's Gender: Male Pet's Age: 3 Name of Dog: dallas Already Tried: 150 mg of doxy 2x a day for two weeks with no improvement.. i think he should be taking 350mg 2x aday but my vet say no just 150mg
Hello. Thanks for writing in. Treatment for Lyme disease can range from 2.5-5mg/lb of doxycycline twice daily. Dallas is on the low end dosage. By 2 weeks time, he should be showing signs of improvement. If he hasn't, then I would probably increase the dose to 350mg twice daily and see how that helps. I would discuss it with your vet again. The problem with the higher dosage is that it would be more likely to cause vomiting. If the higher dose of doxycycline isn't working, they may need to try a different antibiiotic. At 2 weeks out, if they don't increase the dosage, I would at least change antibiotics. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

THANKS ...I TALKED TO MY VET TODAY DUE DALLAS NOT WANTING TO EAT AND DRINK.. WE TOOK HIM OFF THE DOXY FOR NOW.. AND WITH IN 24 HR HE IS DOING MUCH BETTER AS FAR AS WANTING TO EAT AND DRINK.. I AM HOPING SHE PUTS HIM ON A DIFFERENT ANTIBOTIC..AND WE SEE AN IMPROVEMENT WITH HIS LAMENESS.
ALSO WONDERING WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON HIM HAVING A TYROID PROBLEM..?
Yeah. The doxycycline can cause nausea, even some vomiting. As far as the thyroid problem goes, are you basing that on his lameness, or are there other concerns you have with any other signs he may be showing?
YES LAMENESS ALSO HE HAS HAD SKIN ALERGY FOOD ALGERGYS
ADN SEEMS TO ALWAYS SEEK WARMNESS...AND NOW NO IMPROVEMENT TO THE LAMENESS AFTER TAKING THE DOXY FOR TWO WEEKS.
Thanks. Lameness is not really a symptom of hypothyroidism. Chronic skin problems are. It wouldn't be wrong to check, but it is unlikely that he has a thyroid problem at a young age. If they are checking for a thyroid problem, I would run a full panel. Hope this helps.
