Customer Question

There is a slight chance my 17lb rat terrier ate .25mg of alprazolam last night, though it is in blister sealed packaging so unlikely, but he does seem a bit more tired today. Should I be concerned?

VetTechErin :

Hi there! My name is XXXX, XXX I would be happy to help you with your question about Scooter.

VetTechErin :

Xanax is sometimes used in vet medicine to treat behavioral disorders in dogs, as can be seen here.

VetTechErin :

At 17 pounds, if Scooter ingested 0.25 mgs, that would be within the normal dosage for a dog that size.

VetTechErin :

Is Scooter showing any other signs of illness?

Customer :

No, he is eating fine, he is just a bit tired. I am glad to hear it would be normal dose range if he did eat it.

VetTechErin :

As long as he is acting normally aside from being a little tired, there's probably nothing to be concerned about. As it gets hotter (it's been record-setting hot here lately), a lot of dogs will show a decrease in energy. They do not sweat the same way we do, so they do not regulate their heat as effectively.

Customer :

That makes sense, he doesn't tolerate heat well in general. I appreciate your help Erin.

VetTechErin :

Keep him cool and hydrated, and keep an eye on his lethargy. If he starts to get worse, or show any other signs of illness, then you might want to get him in to see a vet, but so long as he seems to be doing well otherwise, he should be okay.

VetTechErin :

Not a problem! Have a good rest of your day, and keep yourselves cool! :)

Customer :

You too, thanks.

I'm glad to hear that he's bounced back from his lethargy! Nobody likes this heat. I have to say the past few days, I've been pretty lethargic myself.

I hope everything continues to go well! :)
