Requesting another opinion re administering 1/2 or 1/4 100mg phenobarbital scrip for my husky's recent onset seizures.Age 13-14 Altho PB is OK at night, I am deeply concerned that groggy staggering and falling may result in injury in daylight hours - she is an indoor outdoor dog. Thank you in advance.

Hi Jacustomer-2ot735ut~
Although obviously we can't give you dosing instructions without an in-person, real life relationship with you and your dog, I can tell you that according to Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, Phenobarbital is often dosed initially at 5mg/kg (or about 2.3mg/pound). It is then adjusted up or down, depending on the dog's seizure threshhold and what it takes to keep the seizures under control.
Based on your description and the average weight of a Husky/Malamute, I think that the 25mg-50mg (which is 1/4 - 1/2 of a 100mg tablet) is well under what the handbook suggests. I suspect that your vet is dosing your dog lightly because of her advanced age and the fact that her seizures don't seem to be frequent at this point.
There's a great website about Pheno here: http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/Phenobarbital.html#anchor3425188
I can understand your concern about having Poakea on the medication during the day because of the risk of her falling and injuring herself...however, Phenobarbital is one of those drugs that needs to build up to a therapeutic level in order for it to work the way it's supposed to, so if she doesn't get her medication on schedule, it won't be able to control the seizure.
If there is a way to contain her when you're not able to watch her...a large crate or kennel, that way you could allow her to have the medication as prescribed and not have to worry about her falling and getting hurt.
I hope this helps.
