My Lakeland terrier is a friendly chap and great company. However when we are out in the woods he chases cyclists or joggers - just to be friendly but they dont usually like it much! Any ideas how we can stop this behaviour - we do not want always to keep him on the leash. Sue
Hello and welcome. My name is XXXXX XXXXX though I have been a Dog professional with this company since 2007 I have been a professional in the dog field for over twenty years. It will be my pleasure to help you today. What commands does Chester listen to no matter where you are?How often do you or can you do training with Chester? What type of training have you done in the past?
He will sit, shake hands, lie down and come back. We train him every day. We took him to puppy class but now our training is at home, in the garden, out on the lead etc.
Thank you for that information. So it sounds like his recall is good if he will come back to you outside when called. What you want to do then is to prevent it from happening in the first place and to do that you would train the command leave it. Leave it means take your mind off of whatever you want at that moment and put your attention on me. You would use this command as you see a bicycle, joggers etc. If the dog is food motivated I recommend clicker training and the food reward when you start training outside has to be more enticing to Chester than the jogger. So in the house you can use soft dog treats as reward and as you move to the yard up it to cheese chunks and when you start training in the woods/trail use small pieces of chicken. Whatever you are asking him to leave alone during training you have to be sure that what you have as reward is something he will really want. I will direct you to a site for clicker training which will show you how it works and take you step by step. The clicker costs about 3 dollars in a pet store. Watch the videos first so you get an idea of what you are going to be doing.
