The edges of both of my dog's ears are crusty and you can see the raw skin. This is the only place that I have seen so far that is like this. I gave her a bath over a week ago and they were okay then. I bought some hotspot medicine for it, washed them the best she would let me and put some of that on it. What else can I do for her ears? It looks very painful.
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Chow/Lab mix Pet's Gender: Female Pet's Age: 4 Already Tried: Medicine for hotspots. Washed the infected area and put that medicine on it.
Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and would be glad to help!Based on your description - I would recommend the skin is evaluated for both a bacterial infection and a fungal infection as I have commonly seen both of those types of infections cause the lesions on the ears as you describe. With that said - the other possible test that we should consider is to do a skin scraping - Certain processes such as Sarcoptic Mange can cause just what you describe. How we can easily determine which of the above is present is often by a simple skin scraping (LINK HERE) to look at under the microscope. For local lesions such as this, some veterinarians also use topical neosporin or Animax (EXAMPLE here)If you have any follow-up questions - please do not hesitate to ask!Otherwise - please remember to click ACCEPT. If I cannot afford a vet right now what medicines are most effective for mange?
there is not an OTC medication for mange
Would I have to take her to the vet or can I just go purchase some from the vet?
Yes - it would need to be diagnosed by the veterinarian prior.
Okay, thank you very much.
You are very welcome!
