Customer Question

I have a Doxin and I think she pulled a muscle in her back from jumping up onto my bed ( which she is not allowed to do) She wont walk down orup the stairs and shivers a lot. I have givin her 1/4 of generic aspirin and it seems to help but last nigh and this morning is starting to hide under the bed which is not normal behavor. My questin is do I take her in to the vet or keep giving her aspirin? This morning ater her pill she did walk down the outside stairs by herself.

Thanks,
Renee

Dr. Andy :

Welcome to JustAnswer! I would be happy to assist you. I am a 2003 graduate from UC Davis and a Medical Director of a 4 veterinarian practice.

Dr. Andy :

Aspirin is garbage. Very hard on stomach and not very powerful to help with possible bad soft tissue injuries, or even a disc herniations in the spine (common with doxie's).

Dr. Andy :

Yes, well worth the vet visit. They could give much better pain drugs and/or anti-inflammatories:

Dr. Andy :

A few common medications prescribed by vets (not all options, but many of the most common choices):

Dr. Andy :

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Dr. Andy :

Rimadyl

Deramaxx

Dr. Andy :

Metacam

Dr. Andy :

Also, they will do an exam to see if there is any concern for a disc herniation, especially with the breed:

Dr. Andy :

Disc Herniation

Dr. Andy :

So, some x-rays might be in order depending upon exam findings.

Dr. Andy :

Yes, well worth the vet visit. the shivering is a slam dunk to suggest continued discomfort.

Dr. Andy :

Good Luck
