Dr. Andy :

Welcome to JustAnswer! I would be happy to assist you. I am a 2003 graduate from UC Davis and a Medical Director of a 4 veterinarian practice.

Dr. Andy :

Hello

Dr. Andy :

This is serious.

Dr. Andy :

Even if you were to give an antibiotic, it would not immediately help.

Dr. Andy :

Coughing, gagging, etc...at this age can be life threatening. Why?

Dr. Andy :

Well, the rule-outs for possible causes include conditions like:

Dr. Andy :

- A upper respiratory infection (bacterial and/or viral)

- Asthma

- Bronchitis (caused by infection or allergies)

- Heart disease (an enlarged heart will apply pressure on the lungs)

- Pneumonia

- Heartworm disease

Dr. Andy :

- cancer

Dr. Andy :

Without question, if exhibiting any immediate breathing issue right now like:

Dr. Andy :

- excessive panting
- gagging every few minutes

Dr. Andy :

you can't wait. ER visit tonight.

Customer :

She also has an open sore on left side of her cheeck

Dr. Andy :

Understood, but not believe related to the gagging

Dr. Andy :

Truly wish i could do more, but best answer I can provide is to inform you of potential issues and what I would do.

Customer :

those are her symptoms

Customer :

excesive panting, gaging every few minutes like you mentioned right now

Dr. Andy :

Off to the ER is my recommendation:

Customer :

go take her to the er?

Dr. Andy :

Dr. Andy :

Second Link to find an ER

Dr. Andy :

Yes

Customer :

thanks

Dr. Andy :

I do truly believe it is indicated.

Thank you for update. Sorry to hear about the combination of problems.
I hope everything can work out okay.

could it be a thyroid problem by the throat

Picture
Expert:  Dr. Andy replied 349 days and 20 hours ago.

Unlikely related to thyroid. As best guess.
If anything we see more hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone) problems. Not thyroid cancer or mass/tumors of thyroid.

Dr. Andy

Customer replied 349 days and 18 hours ago.

the blood work looked normal expect the thyroid.

Picture
Expert:  Dr. Andy replied 349 days and 17 hours ago.

If it was low, then you would need to request your vet to run a additional thyroid test called a T4 by E.D. A regular thyroid test can be falsely low when sampled if a pet is sick. So, we run this extra test to confirm if they are truly low thyroid and need supplementation.

vet said she could have a heart attack, and couldn't remove tumor on bottom gum .

Picture

Well, cats really don't have heart attacks. They can have strokes, where they throw a blood clot somewhere in the body.

If vet can't remove tumor, then they should refer you to a surgical specialist to see if they can remove it!

I am sorry to hear about the tumor.
At this time, there is nothing else I can think of adding to my answer because of the difficulty of the case, other than consulting a specialist for a second opinion.
