I can't get my friends dogs vet tonight and he just had a resuture of his scrotum. Being a 155 lb. Great Dane, I was wondering, for pain, if he could have aspirin? My late husband used to give aspirin sparingly to a dog years ago as it was 8 times more effective on a canine than a human. Can he take Oxycodone?
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Great Dane Pet's Gender: Male Already Tried: This is his third suturing. His owner is frantic and sleep deprived over the last 14 days. She can't make it anymore without sleep and needs to treat the dog with something so that can happen before she collapses. She is a responsible owner and has been with him diligently, went in the kitchen to make a sandwich and he chewed the scrotum where the sutures have been removed and it was healing nicely. Tonight he has wire sutures and is sedated, but she is worried for pain. What can she give?
Hello, welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian, and I'll be happy to help you in any way I can.
While some vets suggest the use of aspirin, I do not. It has been known to cause ulcers in the stomach after even just a single dose.
also, it's not a particularly effective drug in dogs.
for pain management, the only over the counter product I sometimes suggest, is acetaminophen (tylenol), which if dosed properly, can provide some pain relief.
dosed at about 5mg per pound of body weight, it is usually well tolerated.
I'd probably start with 500mg for a 155 lb dog.
extreme caution must be taken against overdose, as it can cause liver failure just like in people.
Can he have hydrocodone 7.5 mg/500 mg acetominophen? one tablet?
I have hydrocodone and oxycodone 5 mg./325 mg acetominophen left over from my surgery. Could we give hme one of these?

No, that is not considered a safe product for use in dogs. please do not use that medicine.
it is inappropriate and unsafe.
